On Saturday, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, declared that President Bola Tinubu alone possesses the authority to reopen the nation's borders.
He made this claim during a conversation with people from the Kongolam border community in Katsina State's Mai'adua Local Government Area.
In response to calls for the reopening of the borders, Adeniyi gave the assurance that talks and conversations were taking place on the matter.

Adeniyi went on to give his assurance that the Service would prioritize eliminating barriers that hinder free commerce in order to support the current administration's goal of promoting economic growth.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the CG insisted that proactive steps had been taken to lessen the number of checkpoints at the border posts and foster cooperation between the traders and service personnel.
"We are aware of the worries expressed by the border communities, especially in relation to the number of checkpoints and the closing of land borders.
"We have conveyed the worries and grievances raised by the inhabitants of the border communities to the President, and since he is receptive, he has ordered us to release food items that have been confiscated, provided that they are sold exclusively in Nigerian marketplaces," the spokesperson stated.
"We are aware of the worries expressed by the border communities, especially in relation to the number of checkpoints and the closing of land borders.

"We are aware that there are markets in the vicinity of our borders, and not all of them are geared at smuggling items across the border.
