Politics: NASS reviews 2024 budget upward – Doguwa
Alhassan Doguwa, a member of the House of Representatives, stated that the National Assembly had reviewed the 2024 budget, which President Bola Tinubu had just signed.
This was said by Doguwa, who is the Kano State representative for the Doguwa/TudunWada Federal Constituency, during an interview on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Thursday.
In the 2024 budget, he claims, the budgets of other government agencies were also evaluated upward, not just the National Assembly.
The President's original ₦27.5 trillion budget for 2024 was boosted to ₦28.7 trillion and presented to the National Assembly in November.
Legislators also increased the budgets of other agencies, including the Ministries of Defense, Police Affairs, Agriculture, and Health, according to Doguwa, the chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Upstream.
"What was budgeted for NASS by Mr. President was slightly lower than what we have finally passed into law," the lawmaker stated.
The Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Health were among the other government ministries whose budgeted amounts were reevaluated, naturally, for very evident institutional and operational reasons.
In addition to the elected members, Doguwa pointed out that other organizations that comprised the legislative branch of the government were also intended to receive funding from the National Assembly budget.
It is not for the 360 members of the House of Representatives or the 109 senators in the Senate, he declared.
"The institutions, departments, and sectoral creations that makeup what we refer to as the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria" are covered by the comprehensive and lump sum budget for the assembly.
